4 Steps to Building a Successful Warehouse

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

Ah, April 1st is finally here.  One thing that the beginning of April marks (other than a laundry list of pranks and jokes) is the beginning of this year’s Final Four!  It has been a crazy tournament thus far, and with hometown heroes Butler appearing in the semi-finals this year, it promises for a thrilling conclusion.  In honor of this exciting occasion, we have decided to do this week’s blog on “4 Steps to Building a Successful Warehouse.”

1.
Plan the Layout—There are a few important factors that go into planning the layout of your warehouse.  Your floor plan will have a big impact on the way you want to outfit your facility with pallet rack.  For example, areas with offices, bathrooms, and exits will need to be taken into account when determining the location of your pallet rack or shelving units It helps to gather as much information about the layout of your facility, but a lot of this info should be available on the building’s blueprints.  Our team of CAD specialists will assist you in designing the layout of your warehouse.

2.
Select the Appropriate Equipment—Now that you have a better idea of where you would like to put your storage equipment, you need to determine what your specific needs are so that we can help identify the best solution to your warehousing needs.  Our sales representatives will help you select from a wide variety of storage options including pallet rack, drive-in rack, pushback rack, steel shelving, rivet shelving, etc.  The key here is to carefully analyze your unique needs in order to ensure that your storage facility operates at the most efficient level possible.

3.
Installation—The installation of your storage equipment should be a relatively simple task.  If it is a small job, most of the equipment can be assembled by your warehouse workers.  However, if you are outfitting an entire warehouse with pallet rack or shelving units, I would recommend calling a professional to help with the installation.  Storage Solutions has a crew of professional installers that would be happy to help you install new equipment, or tear down and move existing equipment.  Other options would be to call a third party contractor.

4.
Upkeep—Now that you have outfitted your warehouse with storage equipment, you need to make sure to keep tabs on the condition of your storage equipment.  The most important thing in your warehouse is the safety of your employees.  Make sure to stay proactive; identify and resolve any potentially problematic areas before someone gets hurt.  Storage Solutions is partnered with the Safety Managment Group, and we provide safety consulting, training, staffing, program planning and implementation on your job.  If you have questions about the condition of your storage equipment, give us a call and we will be happy to help.

That’s it for this week’s Storage Solutions blog.  Enjoy the rest of this year’s NCAA basketball tourney, and please join us again next week!

Meet Storage Solutions Employee Dan Stroh

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

Storage Solutions is excited to announce that we have a new team member!  Dan Stroh has just joined our team of Project Managers at Storage Solutions Inc.  One of Dan's main responsibilities as a project manager will be taking care of the logistics for the shipping and receiving of pallet rack and material handling equipment.  He will also coordinate with our pallet rack and material handling vendors to make sure that we have an appropriate amount of new storage equipment in stock.  However, his most important responsibility at the moment is assisting in the order entry for new and used pallet rack and storage equipment.  This is to ensure that we are able to process all of the purchase orders and cater to our clients' needs in a timely manner.

Dan has also been brought on board to help organize a large project we will be undertaking in the near future.  Storage Solutions has decided to add a large refabrication center to our current facility.  We will soon have the ability to refabricate pallet racking uprights and beams, allowing us to customize our storage equipment to the exact specifications of our customers. This is yet another step we are taking towards becoming the industry leaders for pallet racking and material handling equipment.

Now let's get to know Dan:

Hometown:  Columbus, IN

Education:  DePauw University

What is the most interesting job you had before coming to work for Storage Solutions?  "The most interesting job experience I've had was working as an intern with the American Leadership Academy.  The Academy is based out of Indianapolis, but they host students in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico every spring.  The added joy from being able to swap the dismal Indiana winter for the sun and beaches of Cabo, along with getting to meet and become friends with many different succesful leaders made for a truly unforgettable experience."

What excites you the most about being part of the Storage Solutions team?  "While terms like pushback rack, carton flow, and roll form pallet rack were very confusing on day one, I am beginning to understand many of the different terms and applications for the equipment in this industry.  I am just excited to continue learning more about the pallet racking and material handling industry so that I can have a positive impact on the Storage Solutions team."

We here at Storage Solutions would like to devote this week's blog to recognizing some of the accomplishments of our installation crews in 2009.  As you may or may not know, we have our own team of professional installation crews.  This helps us provide you some very big benefits!  It allows us to save our customers a lot in the overall cost of purchasing new racking equipment.  Independent contractors can be very expensive, and this additional variable can substantially increase the total cost of your pallet rack purchase.  Additionally, our crews are specifically focused on installing and tearing down pallet rack and racking components.  This enables them to get the job done in a quick and efficient manner, while maintaining an exceptional level of quality in their work.  With that being said, let's take a minute to look at some of their achievements from 2009:

  • Installed over 295,000 Sq Ft of Free Standing Mezzanines
  • Installed Shelf Supported Mezzanines consisting of 8,450 New and Used Shelving Sections
  • Installed 8.5+ Million Sq Ft of New and Used Pallet Rack
  • Installed 6,400 Sections of New and Used Shelving Sections
  • Installed 28,000 pallet positions of Push Back & Drive-In/Thru
  • Dismantled, Packaged, and Shipped over 9.5 Million Sq Ft of Used  Pallet Rack, Shelving, Mezzanines, Etc.
  • Moved numerous companies' material handling equipment from old facilities to new ones
  • Employ 8 Crew Leaders and 45 full time "In House" Laborers
  • Completed projects in 27 States and Mexico including: California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin

On behalf of the rest of us here at Storage Solutions, I would like to say thanks to all of our hard working installation crews.  Keep up the great work in 2010!

Food Storage and Thanksgiving

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

Hello all, and Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Storage Solutions!  Yes, it is once again that time of year; the time when we celebrate the coming together of different groups of people (the Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock, and the Native American tribe the Wampanoag Indians) for the autumn harvest feast that we now call Thanksgiving.  It was a simpler time in 1621, and the first Thanksgiving meal shared by the colonists was vastly different from our modern Thanksgiving traditions. The only two items that historians know for sure were on the menu are venison and wild fowl.  However, it can be assumed that the Pilgrims didn't enjoy a number of the vegetable dishes that we commonly have in our modern day Thanksgiving celebrations.

There are two main reasons for this.  Vegetables typically didn't play a large part in the feast mentality of the seventeenth century.  It was also very difficult for the early settlers to keep food preserved for long periods of time.  So, depending on the time of year, many vegetables weren't available to the colonists.

A lot has changed over the last few hundred years that has enabled us to enjoy such commodoties as pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and cranberry sauce on our beloved turkey day.  One of the main factors contributing to our ability to have such an eclectic array of food on Thanksgiving has been the evolution of food storage and preservation techniques. The preservation of harvested and prepared food for future consumption is one of the oldest practical arts, and a necessity that developed from the sheer need to survive in a hostile environment where fresh food was not always available.  Early methods of food preservation ranged from drying fruits and vegetables, to salting and smoking meats.

Modern day techniques for storing and preserving food are much more advanced.  Typically, perishable food products will be stored and shipped in coolers or freezers to help preserve the food.  There are entire warehouses, which are basically giant freezers, that are optimal for storing mass amounts of perishable goods.  One important factor in the storing of these foods is the type of pallet rack being utilized.  It is important to use the appropriate type of racking in the food industry to maintain a clean environment. For this reason, structural C-channel rack is preferred over tubular rack because if something spills, it is easier to clean the open C-channel than it is to clean inside the closed tubular channel.  Another type of rack that is typically associated with the food industry is two deep pushback pallet rack.  Only going two pallets deep per row helps keep the product moving quickly as opposed to sitting on the shelf for an extended period of time.

There are some foods, such as ice cream, which need to be kept at extremely low temperatures.  Ice cream is typically kept at a temperature of -25°F, and these extreme conditions can cause an increased amount of strain on the racking equipment and materials.  It is recommended that a rack inspection be performed at least once annually, but more frequent inspections can be recommended depending on the amount of damage inflicted on the racks by the fork lifts and trucks.  Storage Solutions offers a warehouse safety service, where we will come in and make sure that all of the racking welds and anchors are in proper condition.

Thanks for joining us for another Storage Solutions blog post.  Have a fun and safe holiday weekend!
